The Objects Left Behind

The story of Chaim(as) Kobrin(as) begins with the objects he left behind.

The Violin

Inside a grey case lay the violin, which was repaired at a shop in Tel-Aviv by Amnon Weinstein, a violinmaker.  It has a light red-brown color over a golden base varnish. The vintage bow placed next to it has “KOBRIN” written in Hebrew on its edge. The instrument has a label inside that reads  “Nicolaus Amatus Fecit in Cremona 1634”. We do not know where or when this violin was bought. Later on, the journey of this violin would be discovered.

Freemasons Pin & Ring

Stored inside a small box are the Freemasons member pin and ring. Chaim(as) Kobrin(as) was a member of the Freemasons Genossar chapter in Tiberias. As it was part of the Freemasons tradition, he kept everything that went on in the meetings a secret. Later on, we discovered one photo where Chaim(as) Kobrin(as) wore this ring on his finger. A detail that was never payed attention to before.

Clinic Sign

The clinic sign of Chaim(as) Kobrin(as) was also discovered inside the box, with his name written in Hebrew and English. This was the sign that hung outside the family house and in front of his clinic in Tiberias (Tveria). Later, this object would lead us to where his clinic was located in Tiberias.

Family Album

Only one family album containing a small amount of black and white photos exists, since most of the albums were lost. Some photos have dates written on them, others have names scribbled in Polish on the back. As we flipped through the photo album, there were many unrecognised people in the photos. One particular family photo would reveal a lost family member.

Photos & Letters in Another Box

Liat, the daughter of Leon(as) (Arie) Kobrin(as), the brother of Chaim(as) Kobrin(as), had a box that was left by her father after he passed away. The contents of the box were never thoroughly searched. Isaac and Liat opened it together in Israel. What they found were unexpected surprises that would lead us to more stories.

As we examined these personal objects, it felt as if each had its own unique story to tell. These stories will be revealed in the upcoming chapters.
